Cowtown 5k Race Report

What a horrible day to be running! It was 40 degrees and 30mph winds! Yikes! The wind just seems to follow us wherever we go. As I heard the winds howling in the wee hours of Saturday morning, I decided I made a very good decision to run the 5k instead of the 10k!

Traffic was horrible going to the race, but we parked just in time for Christine to head to the half marathon start (her race started 45 minutes before ours). Jonathan and I waited in a very long line for the bathroom at Barnes and Noble where it was warm and stayed there until about 5 minutes before the start.

The start was horrible, as there were no pace guidelines and lots and lots of strollers. We spent the first mile, and frankly most of the second trying to get around people. The course itself was hilly with way too many turns (22 someone said). There was one water stop that I walked through, and I didn’t walk other than that (not even on the hills!). Jonathan actually ran with me. We didn’t speak, but it was nice to run it together. Especially since one would find a route around someone and make room for the other! We had to tag team to get around/through some folks!

The race itself was horribly organized (don’t get me started on the bag check debacle). If it were not for a free place to stay and getting to see good friends, I would not run it again. There were some good things about the race though. The pluses were: an abundance of free food and beverages (with no real limit and yummy stuff like guacamole), a cool finisher’s medal if you ran the half or full, a great technical shirt for only $10 extra. And, for us, the chance to see friends we haven’t seen in awhile.

  1. I am so happy that you guys came to see us. It was really fun to hang out with you and spend time at the race, even though the conditions were awful. Thanks for coming and for being such wonderful friends.
